CORSIA is the market-based measure to reduce and offset CO2 emissions generated from International Civil Aviation. It aims to contribute to the collective medium term global aspirational goal of keeping International Civil Aviation carbon neutral from 2020 onwards (net CO2 emissions at the same level as in 2020). CORSIA relies on the use of emissions units from the carbon market to offset the amount of CO2 emissions that cannot be reduced through the use of technological and operational improvements, and sustainable aviation fuels. In order to enable the offsetting, all aeroplane operators conducting international flights are required to monitor, report and verify CO2 emissions from their international flights, independently from the later applicability offsetting requirements. The data reported by the aeroplane operators through their States will be used for the calculation of the CORSIA's baseline, as well as for the basis of calculating aeroplane operators offsetting requirements, where applicable.
