About EU-SEA CCCA CORSIA

TO STRENGTHEN NATIONAL AND REGIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL CAPACITY

TO MITIGATE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS FROM CIVIL AVIATION

Project Background

The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a political grouping of 10 countries in South East Asia, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. It has a combined population of approximately 625 million people, 8.8% of the world's population.

ASEAN and the EU have strong political, commercial and cultural ties based on mutual respect, common interest and shared values. ASEAN is the European Union's third largest trading partner and the EU is ASEAN's second. More than 10 million passengers now travel between the two regions every year and this number continues to grow significantly.

The EU-SEA CCCA CORSIA project is funded by the European Union and implemented by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) with the objective of strengthening National and Regional environmental capacity to mitigate Greenhouse Gas (GHC) emissions from civil aviation and enhance political, economic and environmental partnership in the context of civil aviation between the EU and South East Asia.

The specific objectives are listed as

        1. To develop or support existing policy dialogues with partner countries in South East Asia on mitigating GHG emissions from                  civil aviation.

        2. To contribute to the 'CORSIA readiness' process of partner countries in South East Asia to implement CORSIA in line with the                agreed international schedule and to join the voluntary phase in 2021 or at the earliest time possible.

The project will facilitate a sharing of expertise in civil aviation environmental context between the EU and ASEAN stakeholders and address a broad spectrum of topics including support in the creation and/or improvement of existing State Action Plans, training for National Accreditation Bodies and Verification Bodies in the region, training on Emissions Reporting, development of IT infrastructures and databases to name a few.

Implementation

The project is funded by the European Union and will be implemented by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in conjunction with its ASEAN stakeholders. The projects will run until August 2022.
